Health Tip Of The Week - Tips & Tricks That Keep Me On Track

There are no secrets or magic pills, when it comes to weight loss/fitness, but these things help me to stay on track.

1.  Making a weekly menu.
At the beginning of the week, I like to make my menu and grocery list.  It helps keep you on track, when you know what you will be eating every night.  You aren't coming home at the end of a long day trying to find something to prepare or running through a drive through on your way home.

2.  Not going more than 2 days without a workout.
If I go more than two days, I start to get to where I don't want to do it.  I get out of my routine, and it gets harder to get back into it.

3.  Doing workouts that I enjoy.
I have tried running for years.  I have given it months to improve, and I do get better, but I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT!!!!  I would go back to it year after year, I guess because it was such a challenge for me, and I have this thing with proving to myself that I can do something.  After about 15 years, I have realized that I should stop torturing myself.  I can do it, obviously, but why keep putting myself through it when I hate it so badly?  Just to prove I can make myself suffer over and over again?!  It just doesn't make sense to me!  I would much rather do something that I enjoy and look forward to.  Running just stresses me out.  It just doesn't suit my personality.  So, I'm gonna give myself permission to move on.

4.  Keeping a workout journal to gauge my progress.
I love weight training, so that is where I focus my attention.  I have a written log of my workouts.  Workouts that I have found or put together.  I date them, write down how many reps. sets, and weight I use.  Over a few weeks time, I can go back and see progress.  It let's me know I'm moving in the right direction, and keeps me pushing to get better.

5.  Having a weekly cheat meal.
I believe in moderation, not deprivation.  When I was in the middle of my weight loss, I allowed and planned for one cheat meal per week, and I still lost my 75 pounds!  You can't and shouldn't deprive yourself of everything.  Now, if I want something, I have it.  I don't eat it all day or binge, but I eat what I want and move on.  I definitely eat well a majority of the time, but I allow myself a cheeseburger or pizza every now and then.

6.  Preparing for sleep.
I have suffered from insomnia for 11 years.  I have a nonstop, overthinking brain.  I have to make plans for a good nights sleep.  That can include a hot bath, soft music, turning my electronics off, hot tea, reading, etc.  All those things help to get my body ready to shut down.  If I'm not sleeping than my brain isn't functioning.  I am mean, hungry, and won't workout, because I am exhausted.  It ruins my entire day!  I have to force myself to do these things, but it makes all the difference.

7.  Working out during the day, when I feel I have the most to give.
I am a night owl.  I always have been.  That's just the way my internal clock is set up.  I hate mornings!  I have no energy at all.  I will never get into a routine where I work out first thing in the morning.  Would it be easier in some ways?  Probably, but I just can't give all I have in the morning.  My strength and stamina is probably 50% less than in the evening, and I get very frustrated, because I know what I am capable of.  To get the most out of my workouts, I need to do it late afternoon or early evening.  I fought the evening workout for a long time.  Then, I realized that it is ok.  I enjoy it in the evening, I have more to give, it doesn't interrupt my sleep, and I just feel happier.  There are no set rules, and everyone is different.  Don't make things harder on yourself than they have to be.

8.  Acknowledging my progress.
From time to time, I go back and look at old pictures of myself.  It is good to remember where you started, and acknowledge all of the changes you have made.  It reinforces my lifestyle, and reminds me that I can do anything I put my mind to.

9.  Always being mindful of what I am putting in my body.
Every second of every day, I am aware of what I am putting in my body.  Whether it is a beverage, a piece of gum, or a meal.  I have a list in my head of what I have ate that day.  So many people pick up extra calories with a handful of this or that throughout the day, and they really have no recollection of doing it.  If you asked them what they ate that day, they wouldn't even remember to include it!  That leads to lots of unwanted pounds during the course of a year.  It just isn't worth it!

10.  Giving myself a break every once in awhile.
I do my best everyday, but I am not perfect.  I have slip ups or setbacks, like anyone else.  I do expect A LOT out of myself.  Friends and family describe me as "hard core," but I am like that with myself more than anyone else.  I have to remember that I am NOT perfect.  If I have a set back, I try my best not to dwell on it, fix it, don't make excuses for it, and move on!  I have to give myself permission to be human, sometimes.

Maybe some of these tips will help you with your goals.  This is what has helped me.  Everyone has their own journey and story.  It isn't a one size fits all.  Everyone has different personalities, goals, and drive.  Find what works for you, and start today!

Recipe Of The Week - Mexican Meatloaf

This is a super easy, healthy recipe, that everyone in my family loved!  We will definitely be making this one again.  I love ground beef, and was a little worried how it would taste with turkey and chicken, but you won't miss the beef at all.  Instead of mashed potatoes, we had mashed cauliflower.

Ingredients

- 1 lb. ground turkey

-  1 lb. ground chicken

-  1 can fiesta corn

-  1 pkg. low sodium taco seasoning

- 1/2 cup bread crumbs

-  1 cup mild salsa

-  3 egg whites

-  1 can mild enchilada sauce

-  1/2 can (4 oz.) chiles - optional

-  shredded cheddar cheese - optional

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  In a large bowl, mix all ingredients, except for the enchilada sauce and cheese.  Put the mixture into 2 loaf pans.  Put 1/4 on the enchilada sauce on top of each loaf.  Cook for 45 minutes.  Take out of oven and add the remaining enchilada sauce over both loaves.  Sprinkle cheddar on top, if you like, and return to the oven for 15 more minutes.

FOTD - My Easy 2 Shadow Look!

This was just a typical Saturday afternoon that I spent out with my family.  I didn't want to spend a lot of time or fuss a lot, so I did this quick and super easy look.  It would be perfect for any day, when you want to look pulled together, but don't have the time or feel like doing a long routine.  Remember, you can use any color and get a similar affect.  I just went with neutrals, because they work well on everyone, and I had a bold blazer on, and didn't want to have too much makeup going on.  Use whatever color suits your taste!

 Products Used

- Pixi Face Primer
-  Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation - Pebble
-  Maybelline Dark Spot Eraser - Brightener
-  E.L.F HD Powder - Translucent
Maybelline Master Hi-Light Blush - Deep Bronze
-  L'Oreal 24 Hour Infallible Shadow - Bottomless Java & Endless Pearl
Benefits They're Real Mascara - Black
L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara - Black
Maybelline Lip Pencil - Nude
NYX Butter Lipstick - Snow Caps
NYX Butter Gloss - Creme Brûlée

After primer and foundation, I applied the Maybelline brightening concealer under my eyes, center of forehead, and bridge of my nose.  This gives that illuminated affect, without actually using a highlighter.  Then, I dusted the E.L.F. HD Powder to set everything.  I did not use a contour.  Just applied the Maybelline Master Hi-Light Blush where you would apply bronzer....cheeks, high points of the forehead, and a little on my chin.

For the eyes, it couldn't be simpler.  I did not use a primer or base.  The infallible shadows are a great pressed pigment, that doesn't crease and lasts all day!  I applied the bottomless java on my lid just up to my crease, using a flat shadow brush.  I patted this on my lid, to really pack on the color and avoid any fall out.  Next, I took a fluffy blending brush and blended out the line of shadow at my crease.  Take plenty of time to blend.  Then, I took a fluffy shadow brush to apply the endless pearl, from just above the crease to the brow bone.  I also applied a little at the inner corner.  Instead of liner, I applied the bottomless java to my lower lash line with a smudge brush.  To finish the look, I used two coats of They're Real Mascara and one coat of L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara to the top lashes. I used one coat of the L'Oreal Mascara on the bottom.

Lip liner, lipstick, topped with gloss, and you're done!

Health Tip Of The Week - The Muscle Weighs More Than Fat Myth!!

I had to write this post, because I couldn't spend one more second, of one more hour, of one more day reading and hearing this!  The older I get, the more I can "let things go" (well some things, guess it depends on what it is), but this one seriously irritates me.  It irritates me so, because it keeps people down.  It gives them an excuse and a way out. It takes away personal responsibility and patronizes people, which just keeps them farther and farther from their goals, and the life they want to live.

"A pound of muscle weighs more than a pound of fat."  What???  How can a POUND of one thing weigh more than a POUND of another thing??!!!  A pound is a pound, period.  Here is the truth about muscle vs. fat.  Muscle is much more dense than fat.  Muscle takes up less space in the body.  Take 2 people who are of the same height and weight, one is 22% body fat, while the other is 30% body fat.  The person with less body fat will be much smaller, because fat takes up more space in the body than muscle.  Also, the person with the most muscle will burn more calories, even at rest, because muscle boosts their metabolic rate.

I hear the "muscle weighs more than fat" typically in the same scenario every time.  Someone starts working out, and instead of losing weight that week, they gained 2 pounds.  There is always a friend or two who will say "it's because muscle weighs more than fat."  I understand, the friend wants to be encouraging and supportive, but the truth is, you didn't gain 2 pounds of muscle in a week.  A more accurate way to gauge your week is by being honest with yourself.....How have I been feeling?  How are my clothes fitting?  Did I get all my workouts in?  Did I eat as well as I could have?  Are there any changes that I should make for next week?  If you are doing what you should be doing, the weight loss will come.  Make a plan, keep a journal, make preparations to keep you from your pitfalls, and don't obsess over the scale!  If you train hard and eat clean, over time you can get smaller, but stay the same weight or gain some weight due to muscle gain, but that is over a prolonged period of time, not a week.  Stay strong, keep chugging along, and you will get there, I promise!!

Health Tip Of The Week - No Gym? No Problem!!

Week after week, month after month, year after friggin' year, you vow to get in shape.  Besides the "I don't have time excuse," I usually hear the "I can't afford a gym excuse."  Whether your budget doesn't allow a membership, or you don't have one close by, it doesn't matter.  It can always be worked around.  Nowadays, we have so many options, and free programs available.  Do you have netflix?  Do you have youtube?  Both offer many workouts, of all types.  Many of which require no equipment.  Check out your local churches and schools, many offer free classes 2 or 3 times a week.  Where I live, we have Columbus Commons, it is a park in the middle of the city, that offers free classes 5 days a week.  All you have to do is register.  Easton Town Center, an outdoor mall, also offers free fitness classes.   Check out your local parks, many have hiking, canoeing, and other free activities for the entire family.  Now that the weather is warming up a bit, make it a routine to take a walk or bike ride with your family after dinner.  It doesn't have to feel like exercise, and you can get in some extra quality time.  Grab a basketball and head to your local park or school.  Play baseball or set up stations to do drills, right at home.  Set up two teams, and see who can finish the drills first.  Another place for free fitness....your local library.  You can check out videos, and mine has a big selection of exercise videos available.  Try apps!  There are many free apps with workouts readily available.  Look on pinterest for printable workouts.  I also like to look up new workouts on bodybuilding.com or magazine websites like, shape, health, fitness, and fitnessrx.  Another option, the thrift store!  It may have never occurred to you, but mine has a lot of fitness dvd's and tapes for very little money.

Try a free local class, even if you have to go alone, chances are you will make a new friend.  Maybe a new fitness partner!  You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.  So, do a little research in your local community, and see what you come up with.  Make It Happen!!

I hope this gave you a few ideas!

My February Favorites!!

These are products that I continually reached for all month long.

-  L'Oreal True Match Lumi Foundation

I have been wearing this foundation nonstop since I got it!  My skin is pretty normal right now, so it has been great.  It has light to medium coverage.  I build it up to medium.  I am in the shade W6.  There are many shades to choose from in warm, cool, and neutral undertones.  If you would like to see my full review, Click Here!

-  Maybelline Color Sensational Lipsticks (Nude Line) - Blushing Beige and Stormy Sahara

This is a newer line to their very popular color sensational brand.  There were really only two colors that I was interested in, and I ended up loving these shades.  The blushing beige is definitely the lighter of the two.  It has a bit of a peach to it.  Reminds me very much of a Kim Kardashian nude.  The Stormy Sahara, is deeper, has more of a brown tint, but not dark at all.  My mom and I both own this and like it, and she is a red head.  I think it is a universally flattering color.  I like to top both of these with a nude gloss, like Victoria's Secret in Mocktail and Milani Glitzy Glamour Gloss in Puttin On The Glitz.

-  Revlon PhotoReady Bronzer - Bronzed & Chic

I have been loving this bronzer, and haven't used another since I bought it.  It is great for contouring, because there is completely matte.  It has four colors, ranging from light to dark, so you can swipe your brush over all four or just the lighter or darker shades.  Because I have a tan now, I use more of the darker shades, but it is nice to be able to customize the color, for what works best for you.  I have absolutely no complaints!

-  Maybelline Master Hi-Light Blush - Coral, Mauve, and Deep Bronze

These are a great two in one, blush and highlighter.  It is perfect for everyday use, and I have used it most of the days that I have worn makeup.  I like all of the colors that I have purchased, but I think the coral is my favorite.  Pick the color that works best for your skin tone, and you won't be disappointed.  They are a little pricey for a drugstore blush, but worth it in my opinion.

-  NYX Pore Filler

I first purchased this in November or December, but I wasn't impressed.  After using it more, I have really come to like it under my foundation.  One of the reasons I didn't care for it is because it seemed  oily.  It just needs to be shaken before application.  It really does help fill in my pores around my nose and forehead, especially when wearing my L'Oreal Lumi Foundation.  The dewy finish can accentuate pores, if you have them.  Use it more in a patting motion, as opposed to rubbing it into the skin.  NYX can be found at some Targets and Ulta.

-  Live Love Dew Body Wash - Lavender

I reviewed this product recently, and went back and bought the lavender scents.  Because I typically workout in the evening, that is also when I shower.  It is so calming and relaxing to use this after a long day.  I follow it up with my Lavender Vanilla Body Butter, Vanilla Lavender Love Potion, and a hot cup of tea.  Such a relaxing feeling at the end of my day!  You can purchase these products and more at livelovedew.com.

-  Nivea Lip Butter - Raspberry Kiss

I have full lips, and in the winter I always need to keep something hydrating on them, or they get very uncomfortable.  I love Nivea products!  I use this during the day, and before bed.  It gives shine,  smells great, and is very hydrating.  I have used this product every day this month!

Have you recently found a great product?  If so, let us in on it by commenting below.
I hope everyone is having a great week!

THE TMI TAG!!

This tag has been circulating a lot lately, and I thought it was a good way to get to know more about me, so here goes!!

-  What are you wearing?
Workout pants and my favorite hoodie....my NYPD hoodie.

-  Ever been in love?
Yes, I have been with my husband for almost 15 years.

-  Ever had a terrible break up?
I'm not sure what is considered a terrible break up, but I don't think so.

-  How tall are you?
5'10"

-  How much do you weigh?
I honestly don't know, because I don't weigh myself or own a scale.  I know around about by the size of clothes that I wear.  I don't recommend that most people don't own a scale, but for me personally, it is more of a hinderance.  It makes me crazy, and I could be obsessive about it.

-  Any tattoos?
Yes, I have 4 and will probably get one or two more.  My last one I got in October with my mom.  When we were in NYC, we got matching mother/daughter Celtic knot tattoos on our wrists.  It was her first.

-  Any piercings?
Yes, my nose has been pierced for 4 or 5 years.  I also have 3 piercing per ear, though I never wear all 3.

-  Favorite TV show?
I can't pick just one that is my current favorite, but my very favorites are Dateline, 48 hours, The Mentalist, Blue Bloods, and Criminal Minds.  My favorite of all time is Friday Night Lights.

-  Favorite Bands?
That's an impossible question to answer for me!  Some of my favorites are The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, Heart, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, Journey, Fleetwood Mac, Chicago, The Eagles, and I am sure that I am missing a few others.

-  Favorite Song?
Another impossible question for me!  I can't even begin to answer that.

-  Something you miss?
Mtv when it actually played nothing, but music videos.  Imagine that, a network called Music Televison that plays Music?!!!  You don't say?????

-  How old are you?
I turned 36 in December

-  Zodiac sign?
Sagitarius and it is pretty accurate, except for saying I'm an extrovert.  I am a loner to the extreme, and have a very small circle of family and friends.  I only do things with my husband, mom, and best friend.

-  Quality that you look for in a partner?
Intelligence, confidence, moral compass, believes in God, is a traditionalist (old school) in a relationship, sense of humor, isn't overbearing or too needy/clingy.  I also like someone who is willing to try new activities with me.  I just always wanted to be with someone that I had fun with and was comfortable with.

-  Favorite quote?
Music washes away from the soul, the dust of everyday life. - Berthold Auerbach
What lies behind us, and what lies before us, are small matters compared to what lies within us. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

-  Favorite Actor?
Matt Damon, Liam Neeson, Mark Wahlberg, Bruce Willis, and Vince Vaughn.

-  Favorite color?
Black

-  Loud music or soft?
Loud all the way, baby!  My ten year old gets on me all the time for playing it so loud, especially in the car.

-  Where do you go when you are sad?
When I am sad, I just want everyone to leave me alone.  I usually go to my room, workout, or take a long bath.

-  How long does it take you to shower?
15 - 20 minutes.

-  How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
Depends on what I am doing.  I only wear makeup 2 - 3 times a week normally.  If I am doing everything than 2 hours.  That includes extensions, lashes, and all the extras.  On average though, an hour to an hour and a half.  Most days, it's just a shower, moisturizing, and lip balm with my hair pulled back.  I'm a SAHM, so I don't feel the need for the works on a daily basis.

-  Have you ever been in a physical fight?
Yes, 3 or 4 times I think.

-  Turn on?
Pretty teeth, good hygiene, sense of humor, isn't easily offended, intelligent, ambitious, decisive, strong character, strong moral code, good dresser, tattoos, long hair, scruffy facial hair, and physically fit.

-  Turn off?
Poor hygiene, tobacco use, drug use, alcohol abuse, bad listener, selfishness, laziness, overly sensitive, can't take a joke, doesn't love Jesus.....I could go on and on :)

-  The reason I started my blog?
I recognized that many women, especially wives and mothers, were in the same spot that I was with putting themselves last every day.  I wanted to share my journey and knowledge, because I had no support and had no idea where to start.

-  Fears?
Something happening to someone I love, especially my son.

-  The last thing that made you cry?
When it comes to my life, I rarely cry.  I do have PMDD, and can get very emotional at times over the littlest things like Mr. Miagi giving Daniel a car for his birthday, in Karate Kid!!  Silly, I know.  I cried  a week or so ago watching Roseanne, because she found out Dan was with another girl for the week they broke up in high school.  I know, I have issues.  I do cry at almost every concert I go to.  I do my best to hide it.

-  Last time you said you loved someone?
Today, I told my son.

-  Meaning behind your blog name?
I just wanted a beauty blog that didn't seem like it was about me.  I wanted it to be a community of women coming together, and learning.

-  Last book you read?
Rick Springfield - Late Late At Night

-  The book you are currently reading?
I'm With The Band - Confessions Of A Groupie

-  Last show you watched?
King Of Queens

-  Last person you talked to?

-  Favorite food?
Cheeseburgers, pizza, seafood, and greek food.

-  Place you want to visit?
NYC....again!

-  Last place you were?
Kroger, Shocking!

-  Do you have a crush?
Ummmm, well a little.....I like Keith Urban and Taylor Kitsch.  Not a crush on anyone I actually know.

-  Last time you kissed someone?
Today, my son.

-  Last time you were insulted?
I'm not sure.  It must have been a long time.  It is hard to offend me though.  I am not sensitive, and I don't put any value into the opinions of people who really don't know me as a person.

-  Favorite flavor of sweet?
I'm not much for sweets.  There are only a few things I like.  My favorite is probably New York Style Cheesecake.

-  What instruments do you play?
I played the saxophone in junior high, but not well!

-  Favorite piece of jewelry
My wedding set, my grandma's emerald and diamond ring she gave me, and for my 35th birthday, my mom bought me a Tacori white gold and blue topaz ring and earring set.

-  Last sport you played?
I don't play sports, but the last active thing I did was lift weights.

-  Last song you sang?
I think it was Gavin DeGraw when my husband and I were coming home from a date.  Think I sang "I don't wanna be".

-  Last time you hung out with someone?
My husband.  We caught up on our dvr'd shows, and worked out together.
